Ingredients: Xylitol (derived from birch bark)
Allergens:
GMO free Xylitol sweetener - quite possibly one of the best tasting, low-glycemic sugar substitute available. Ours is all natural and derived from birch bark, not from GMO corn cobs like some brands.
Xylitol contains 40% less calories and 75% less carbohydrates than table sugar, and is excellent for diabetics, individuals on low carb diets, or simply anyone trying to decrease the amount of simple sugar in their diet.
Substitute for sugar using a 1:1 ratio in all applications except baking recipes that call for yeast.
Xylitol is sugar alcohol that occurs naturally in fruit, vegetables, and plants. Our bodies even produce a small amount of it on a daily basis. Sugar alcohols are digested differently than table sugars,
Aside from less calories and lower glycemic load on the body (when compared to sugar), there are two main health benefits of xylitol sweetener:
#1 - Cavity Prevention Xylitol inhibit the bacteria that cause tooth decay. It also significantly reduces the amount of plaque build up in the mouth over time.
*See "Cavity prevention" study at bottom of page
#2 - Reversal of Tooth Decay
Other studies indicate that xylitol may help rebuild the enamel on teeth that have been demineralized.
We package our xylitol in a resealable stand up pouch that will stay fresh for 2 years if stored in an environment that is low in humidity.
Xylitol has been studied extensively for years, and the only know side effect to humans is a minor laxative in some individuals when consumed in large quantities.
Dogs are unable to metabolize xylitol, and consumption can be fatal. Do not allow pets to consume foods that contain xylitol.
Here is a list of some of the most recent scientific research on xylitol:
Fewer ear infections - In this study, children who were given gum, syrup or lozenges two times a day had a 25% reduction in ear infections.
Cavity prevention - "Double-blind studies enrolling almost 4,000 people, mostly children, have found that the natural sugar xylitol can prevent cavities. 3-8 These trials used xylitol-sweetened gum, candies, or toothpaste. The best evidence regards xylitol gum. One study suggested that gummy bears may be an effective alternative method of administering xylitol to children"
Reversal of tooth decay - This study indicates that xylitol may help rebuild tooth enamel. "These results indicate that xylitol can induce remineralization of deeper layers of demineralized enamel by facilitating Ca2+ movement and accessibility."
Xylitol can be used in just about every application that sugar can, with the exception of breads or other baked goods that use yeast (due to it's anti-fungal properties).
